The Sky
The week ahead

Everything happens on Wednesday.

A total eclipse, the Perseids at peak, and a new moon, all on August 12. Three names for one alignment. You will not see the eclipse. You will see the thing it makes possible.

Take them in the order that causes them

Because
An eclipse needs the moon to be new, sitting between you and the sun, showing you nothing.
↓
Therefore
On Wednesday night there is no moonlight anywhere on earth.
↓
Therefore
The Perseids, which lose to the moon almost every year, win this one.

The event that shuts you out of Spain at 1:37 in the afternoon is the same event that opens the sky over your street at midnight. This is not a consolation prize. It is the other half.

A sentence being served

The moon starts the week in Rohini, one of the twenty seven nakshatras. In the old account the twenty seven are the daughters of Daksha, all married to Chandra, the moon. He loved Rohini and did not trouble to hide it. Daksha cursed him to waste away, and Shiva reduced the sentence to something survivable. The moon would not die. He would diminish, recover, and diminish again, without end.

That is the tradition's account of why the moon has phases. Hold both halves of it. The phases are a punishment, and the punishment is what empties the sky. Chandra serving his sentence is the reason you can see anything at all on Wednesday night.

What the serpent is actually angry about

Most people know an eclipse is Rahu swallowing the sun. Fewer remember the grievance, and the grievance is the whole point. At the churning of the ocean, an asura slipped into the line of gods in disguise and took a mouthful of the amrita. Two of the gods sitting in that line recognized him. Surya and Chandra said something. Vishnu, as Mohini, took his head off on the spot, but the nectar had already passed his throat, so the head lived on as Rahu and the body as Ketu.

He was not caught by the sun. He was reported by the sun. And by the moon. Those two are the informants, which is why, in every telling, those two and only those two are the ones he goes after. On Wednesday they stand in the same degree of sky. Both accusers, in one place, at the only moment in the month when that is possible.

The myth is not a story about the calculation. It is the calculation, told as a grudge.

Eclipses happen near the lunar nodes. Indian astronomy named those two points Rahu and Ketu.

The convergence

Three systems, one instruction

On the twelfth the sun and moon are conjunct in Ashlesha, the nakshatra of the Nagas. Ketu sits nearby in Magha, and his nearness to the sun is why an eclipse is possible at all. Magha is the nakshatra of the Pitris, the stretch of sky the tradition assigns to the dead.

The phase Amavasya. Already the day households remember the dead and give something away.
The node Ketu, the point that permits the eclipse, sitting in the ancestors' quarter of the sky.
The instruction After any grahan, bathe and then give, ideally in someone's name.

Three separate systems on three unrelated clocks, arriving at the same instruction on the same afternoon. Nobody designed that overlap, and there is no need to make it mystical. It is enough that it is true.

The rule, then your card

A grahan binds you where it is visible. Sutak runs twelve hours before local first contact, and where the eclipse cannot be seen, sutak does not apply and temples do not close. What you cannot see does not bind you.

Siberia, Greenland, western Iceland, northern Spain. Two minutes eighteen seconds at maximum.

India

Nothing visible, the sun is down first. Sutak does not apply and temples stay open. A normal amavasya, tithi closing 11:07pm.

Northeastern United States

A thin partial at midday, a tenth of the sun in New York. Sutak applies from roughly midnight. The rule that spares Mumbai does not spare New Jersey. Tarpan in the morning, tithi closes 1:37pm Eastern.

West of the Appalachians

Nothing of the eclipse, everything of the Perseids. Sutak does not apply. Tithi closes 10:37am Mountain, 9:37am Pacific.

What to actually do

1 The meteors. After midnight on the twelfth going into the thirteenth. Face northeast but look wide. Give your eyes twenty minutes and do not check your phone once, because one glance resets the whole twenty. Lie down if you can. The neck gives out before the sky does.

2 The tithi. Amavasya ends at the conjunction, so the window closes 1:37pm Eastern, 10:37am Mountain, 11:07pm in India. If you are offering tarpan, that is a morning in America.

3 The giving. The instruction after a grahan is to give something away in someone's name. This year the node that makes the eclipse possible sits in the ancestors' quarter of the sky, on the day already set aside for the ancestors. If you have been meaning to give something in a grandparent's name, the calendar has stopped making excuses for you.

The eclipse belongs to Spain this year. Most of you will not see a thing. But the nodes are where they are, and the moon is doing exactly what Daksha said it would.

Wednesday, after midnight.
Northeast. Look up.

The week ahead, by sign

Twenty degrees of Leo sits in a different room of every chart.

Whichever house holds it is the one being cleared. Twelve readings by element, plus the full board, the planetary movements, and Saturn at the last gate.

One question, and an email is all it takes

We write twelve sun signs every week. A sun sign puts the eclipse in one house and gives everyone born in your month the same answer. Your own chart has twelve houses with twelve different signs on them, set by the minute you were born, and we could run the same weekly sky against that instead.

We have not built it and we are not selling anything. We only want to know whether it is worth the work. If you would read it, write to [email protected] and say so. If enough of you do, we will look at what it takes and write back to everyone either way.

The week, in your inbox every Friday.

News, money, sport, and culture, ranked and ready. Cosmic Chai runs with it.

Method

Positions computed for August 7, 2026, tropical and Lahiri sidereal. Node positions are true node, which runs up to a degree from the mean node used by many panchangs. Both place Ketu in Magha. Eclipse contact times vary by location, so confirm your local first contact against a panchang before setting sutak. The full board is on the Cosmic Chai page.
